About Us

The Albuquerque Transmitter Hunting group was formed originally with the help of Kevin Kelly N6QAB. Jim Baremore K5QQ, Ed James KA8JMW, Joe Riggs AB5YC, Brett Cunningham AB5P (Silent Key), Brian Mileshosky N5ZGT and Jerry Boyd WB8WFK were among the original hunters, holding hunts at least every other weekend throughout the year.

Over the years, more and more Amateur Radio operators became interested in T-Hunting and joined our group to have a great time. Several within the group have used their T-Hunting skills to locate downed aircraft around the state by DFing their emergency locator transponders (ELTs). Others have assisting the Amateur community around Albuquerque in locating unlicensed operators, bootleggers and the occasional stuck microphone.

In the summer of 2000, the Albuquerque Transmitter Hunters became known across the country even more-so by hosting the first ever USA Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) Championships at Manzano State Park. Over 30 direction finding enthusiasts from across the United States, Ukraine, Australia and China competed against each other to locate hidden transmitters using direction finding techniques as well as map & compass skills. It was a great success, and this event started a new national trend -- the organization of an annual ARDF championship held within the USA!

Today, the Albuquerque Transmitter Hunters are still having a great time holding twcie-monthly traditional car hunts, as well as ARDF hunts at two mountain venues east of Albuquerque. You can help us maintain our rich history by joining our group for the time of your life!
